Owl Purdue: Annontated Bibliographies; Owl Purdue Annontated Bibliographies Samples

A bibliography is a list of sources. In MLA the bibliography is called a Works Cited page and in APA it is a reference list. A bibliography contains all the important information of the source, such as the author, title, publication year, etc. An annotated bibliography is when you have a brief summary of your source in the bibliography. “Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent preparation for a research project.” (Bisignani, Brizee. 2013). Annotated bibliographies are used in research papers. If your paper is an extremely long an annotated bibliography would help your reader tremendously understand why you used your sources and what you gained from them. You can find samples of annotated bibliographies on Owl Purdue. There is no shortcut on creating the perfect annotated bibliography because to each is own just remember that a good annotated bibliography cites it source first with a brief summary followed by a reflection on the source. What did you think? Was the source helpful? Did the source provide clarity or make you rethink some points?

I have never done an annotated bibliography and to be truthfully honest, they seem like pain in the asses. There is a negative stigma around having to do an annontated bibliography because of the work that has to go into it. I can’t help but wonder how many people would actually sit there and read an authors annontated bibliography? For the amount of work that needs to go into an annotated bibliography seems to be like a whole separate paper and lets face it students don’t have a lot of patience. Students don’t even want to be bothered doing a works cited page. However I do believe it is important to know how to do an annontated bibliography because there will be a time in every students school career that they will have to do an annotated bibliography and instead of having that deer in the headlights look on their face, they will know what is expected of them up front. I understand that annotated bibliographies actually make the reader think about their source and understand it while providing the reader the option to know where your points are coming from without having to find every source at the library or internet. I think the main point of an annotated bibliography id to provide clarity for reader in regards to the ethos of your sources.

It has come to the fact that authors need to consider who their audience is. Throughout the years more and more authors have come to realize that their audience plays a huge role in their writing. If not for an audience then why are you writing? When we discussed this graph in our groups of four in class Morgan Mathien made a comment that this graph reminded her of the article we read in our Reading and Noticing 2; Writing for an Audience by Linda Flower. I agree with her because authors have now come to the point where they contemplate who their audience is and the best way to get their message across. What’s the tone I should use? What about my diction? How should I tie my information together? In what why should I write my information? This Graph shows the connection between the reader and the author and that connection is the text. This graph also shows that not all the work falls on the writer, the reader needs to put some effort into it too. The author uses culture, history, tradition, and personal position to write while the reader uses their imagination, dictionaries, memory, artistic sense, and personal position to interpret.
